.Hello comfy undies...goodbye to wedgies.

I have just sent off my next pattern to testers and photographers to do their stuff and am treating myself with a little bit of "just for fun" sewing.

For a long, long time I have owned the Children's Undies pattern by That Darn Kat with intentions to have a go at sewing some for the kids but the project just kept being pushed further and further back.  Lil has just outgrown her last purchased undies and I am sick of complaints of wedgies and seeing more than I need to under her skirt when her legs are spread!  (The people that design kids undies should really keep in mind that little girls flash all the time and actually require a bit more coverage than adults do!)
These undies are sensational.  I made six for her and one for her cousin and they are quite a quick sew once you get the hang of it.  As I was sewing them I did wonder if I was totally wasting my time - not sure if they would compare with Disney Princesses and My Little Pony, but I need not worried.  She was over the moon and looooves them.  She has been wearing them for about a week now and doesn't give a second glance to the store-bought undies in her cupboard.
As you can probably tell, I didn't put a lot of thought into the fabric combinations...I set myself a rule to only use fabric scraps and just mixed and matched without worrying about the finished look.  Some of the fabric is scraps from other projects and others are saved bottom halves of t-shirts I have cut up to make Cupcake Dresses from my book.  I like 'em though, a little crazy - just like the wearer!
I can tell they are totally comfortable.  And the fact that they actually cover her bottom with no gaping holes is great.  I was starting to wonder what we would do about the flashing under her school uniform next year, but now I think I'll whip up a batch of navy blue undies and my problems will be solved!
I personally love it when she gallops around the house in undies and singlet now - cutest little bottom ever...
The pair that didn't make it to the photo shoot...I like this look better than seeing the top of her bottom when she bends over!

I LOVE these! My son is getting towards toilet training - guess what he's getting! I love using your style for inspiration. I have no imagination, and you seem to know what I want... lol

I've made these before too Toni and my girls choose these undies over all others - they say they are more comfortable.
I think it's the leg elastic as much as anything - they don't cut - and I too love the coverage!

Okay, so I never in a million years thought that I'd be reading a post about children's undies, let alone commenting on one ... however, I just thought I'd mention that when I was growing up most of us wore what were referred to as 'gym pants' under our dresses. Cut along the lines of granny undies and worn (normally) over underwear they added some modesty to an outfit that is otherwise unsuitable for active young girls.

I can't wait to make these! I have .5 of a metre of knit fabric here that I was wondering what to do with. How many pairs do you think I will get out of it?

Michaela loves hers. They look so comfy I want to wear them.

It is such a great pattern. I have made them for my toilet training toddler in the boy version. I have used all old tshirts. Super comfy and as they are a little thicker at the front it good for accidents.

I just recently made some of these for my toddler. After seeing them, my 8 yo was asking for mommy-made panties.

You're right about the excellent bottom coverage. It's a great pattern.

Oh so cute! Glad she loves them too. :)

LOL, what a great ad for that pattern, you convinced me! I just ordered it on Esty for my little boy who's about to start toilet training. I cant wait to make his own custom designs...now I just need to get hold of some nice knit fabric...

They are fantastic, bright and gorgeus... I want some! I wish my sewing skills were advanced beyond straight lines so I could attempt some. My girls will have to suffice with their Monkey Bar Knickers (made by Rio, available at Big W). They are like girls trunks and will be what my little girl wears under her school uniform when she starts next year.

they are great, I love the colour combinations. Much better than store bought undies. My daughter is 10 and its impossible to get undies to cover her butt properly. I will have to get that pattern, thanks.

Thought or not, the colour combos look great.

I had this pattern for AGES before I made them up too. A great undie for little girls and as mentioned by others they are the first to get used out of the undie drawer. I also have the boys undies cut out ready to go. Must get on with them and sew them up.

Can you please tell me the fabrics that you use
Would love to make them for my grand children

My sister makes a heap of these for WAHM in the UK.
She 'advised' me that when she made the trims that normal knit would lose it's stretch in a couple of washes, so she suggested that i use swimming costume material.
Has anyone had the issue with normal knits for trims/edge elastic?

Hi Toni,
Do you need an overlocker to sew these little undies? Thanks!

Toni, do you think the size 2 would fit a little 20mo old? She is average size, we're just starting early and there are NO undies that fit her! Hoping this will be my solution!!

I bought this pattern about a year or so ago, but for some reason didn't notice that it doesn't go up to a size 14/16, which is the size my daughter currently wears. So, unfortunately I haven't used the pattern yet, which makes me a little sad, because store bought undies are not comfortable on her (she says) and they're not cheap for the crappy quality I get either. I recently cut up an old pair of her current undies and traced a pattern from those, but I don't see how they'll be any more comfortable since she already complains about the current fit.
