.Revamping the wrap...

It is hard to believe that my VERY first pattern almost 3 years ago...The Versatile Wrap is still amongst the top sellers in my range!  I still love my wrap skirts (and I have many) but am in need of a few more to add to the wardrobe because I think one of my sisters may have stolen 3 or 4 from my stash!

I think I need to reward the Wrap for it's hard work and revamp the cover photo...what do you reckon?  Nothing like a change to spruce things up a bit!
The problem is, I'm having a really hard time deciding on the perfect fabric to use for the new cover...
I purchased some of the Patricia Bravo, Modern Affair fabric range, but when it arrived I just wasn't smitten.  It is really lovely fabric, but just isn't working for me.
So then I took a quick visit to my local fabric store and picked up some funky orange and grey spots from XLN Fabrics, and they are super cool, but when I got them home I just wasn't sure they were going to be right either.

I can't decide for myself...so what else to do, but enlist the help of my blog readers!!
Here's the plea:  Help me choose fabric for the new Versatile Wrap cover photo.
My requirements are:
  • The fabrics need to be from a fairly current range
  • I'm looking for modern, but classic...not too "cute" and no novelty prints
  • Something that will appeal to a wide range of ages
What's in it for you?  Everyone who suggests a fabric (or fabric combo) either by leaving a comment on my blog, Facebook page or email will go into the draw to win a copy of the new, revamped Versatile Wrap pattern.  If I happen to go with your suggestion, I'll send you any THREE Make It Perfect patterns you desire :)

I vote for some Echino. I have a piece of the purple flower bed that I have been planning to make into a wrap skirt. I'm still not sure what I am going to team it up with, maybe the Echino ornament in turquoise? The Chelsea Lion fabric is lovely too - perhaps in the turquoise, with some cream spot on yellow as the contrast fabric?

how about the Michael Miller Turquoise Hummingbirds by Patty Young with a contrast of either Michael Miller Teal Ta Dot or Michael Miller Sea Ta Dot

I love Nicey Jane Pocketbook, especially in Tangerine.

Or perhaps Orange Floral Swirl from Park Slope fabric collection by Erin McMorris for Free Spirit.

One of my favorites: High Society by Khristian A. Howell for Anthology fabrics.

Soliel Collection By Annette Tatum.

Kate Spain for Moda: Fandango.

Pat Bravo Art Gallery MODERN AFFAIR Dim Fusion--great!

Innocent Crush by AMH - i am in so much love with this collection at the moment! I already have some of the cottons and tomorrow I am going to pick up my velveteens and voiles!!

With all the different weight fabrics, you could have a lot of fun making wrap skirts with them for all seasons!!

The Tufted Tweets dot print in Grass with the blue birds; then trim with Michael Miller's Ta Da Dot in Ocean.

The Parisville by Tula Pink collection could work ~ I'd pick French Lace in Dusk and Eye Drops in Mist. The pomegranate is really pretty too.

What about some Urchin for the skirt and Sand Dollar for the accents, both from the Under the Sea Collection from Cloud 9 Fabrics.

Or the Bird Spot by Saffron Craig, a Prints Charming print or something from the Centrl Park range from Kate Spain (I think it is in yardage or will be soon.

Kristy said...

Or almost anything from Ink an Spindle.

I like
Kangaroo Paw in Red Orange and Snow or Ginkgo in Dusty Pink & Red and I have a soft spot for anything in the houses.

The good points, it is a hemp blend and feels great and drapes well, the prints are available for ages, the down points, it isn't cheap and is hand printed so volume may be an issue

kate Spain - Fandango or patty young= sanctuary

I would love to see Betty Dear, Leaf Bliss Orange for the main skirt with Aunt Grace Circle of Friends Blue Allover Diamonds for the contrast. For a more modern/sophisticated look, I'd just do a plain grey for the contrast. OR -- I know it's not released yet, but Melissa Averinos's Swoon line is gorgeous. I think the garland print in the cherry colorway would be an amazing skirt! She's got pics on her blog: http://www.yummygoods.com/blog/2010/9/30/424-swoon-with-me.html
Can't wait to see what you do!

I would go for something bold and bright. Maybe Amy Butler (i have two fabrics from her Midwest Modern range that i was going to make a bag with but now I'm thinking i might have a new skirt instead) or Heather Bailey - i love her Pop Garden range...

Karen D said...

Ooh, I just bought two fabrics which I thought would make beautiful skirts..."Big Poppy" in aqua by Laura Gunn for Michael Miller fabrics and "Poppy" by Alice Kennedy for Timeless Treasures Fabrics...this one is particularly sophisticated I think with the red, black and white and would mix and match nicely with other clothing and accessories.

Must say I am enjoying reading everyone else's suggestions which are giving me lots of inspiration for my own future projects!

I suggest from Amy Butler's Daisy Chain line, under the aquatic category: using the mosaic/river for the main fabric and wildflowers/navy for the trim.

The first 2 found here:

anything from anna maria's innocent crush and some dots. What about if you leave off the bottom contrast strip (I sometimes do that) and make the skirt a touch longer. I love this pattern so much, I have about 7 wraps plus have given away another 3. Also, just wondering why the instructions ask you to measure out 2 panels exactly the same, just reversed. The first time I made it I followed the instructions precisely and afterwards I realised I had just spent twice as long measuring and cutting the same piece just reversed!! Nevertheless, its an absolutely perfect skirt for all shapes and sizes and I think you are very clever!

How about some of the non-novelty prints from the new Little Menagerie collection by Melanie Hurlston, I'm thinking of a combination of the button prints with the stripes and or spots? The colours are gorgeous!

Jayne said...

I love the new about to be released "Gypsy Bandana" from Pillow and Maxfield (see Michael Miller website). A wrap skirt in any of the blues and greens or blues and reds would be gorgeous.

I'm in love with the Oliver+S City Weekend fabrics - especially the Park Ramble design. I have three suggestions:

- River Blue Park Ramble with River Blue Atreet Strip contrast
- Downtown Turquoise Park Ramble with Bistro Red Cafe Dot contrast
- Bistro Red Park Ramble with Yellow Gold Treetop contrast.

Good luck deciding!

I love the new Modern Meadow by Joel Dewberry - Cool Stream palette. I think the skirt would look great in the Dogwood Bloom, Lake and Acorn Chain, Lake.

I've just bought some of the Moda Bliss fabric- they are gorgeous! Contemporary class and sophistication. The colours are beautiful and they have a lovely selection of spots in the collection to coordinate with the prints. Also Giddy bySandy Gervais for Moda also has some beautiful designs in it which would be delectable in the wrap skirt (which is sitting on my sewing table at the moment waiting to be made up!! Have fun deciding on all of these lovely suggestions!!

I definatly think the Alexander Henry Matisse collection would trasnlate wonderfully to a wrap skirt - just the right amount of bold with a solid base colour, because no one really wants a pale pink skirt - well most of the time anyway!

what about Pretty Bird by Pillow and Maxfield (Michael Miller fabric there are some lovely prints and I think they are pretty new.

I was thinking Michael Miller charcoal daisy doodle dandy with lime dinky dots. This is one of my favorites, right now.

My 7 year old and I both like Patricia Bravo vines - though I like Olive with something like Joel Dewberry's Herringbone in Berry,
and she likes pink with Patty Young's Blossoms in Lime.

But if I was making it for me, I would make it with Echino's High on a Perch in spring green, which I adore. And I might even be able to work in Hooty Hoot argyle in Blue, which I also adore. But I'd have to see how that went.

Sanctuary by Patty Young - Seafoam, Aromatherapy! Could maybe team it up with your grey spots?
What so you think??

oh boy - fabric is a whole new language on its own hey!! :)

Alicia Welke said...

I would love to see your wrap skirt in the Sanctuary range by Patty young, the main panel in Dahlia Lama or Aromatherapy and the contrast in Orchid Feng Shui. My second choice would be Gypsy Bandana by Pillow and Maxfield, the bandana border fabrics look stunning!

I like lots of the fabric from Saffron Craig, but I have just spent about half an hour browsing some of the suggestions that are listed in these comments and I agree with KP, now I am full of inspiration!
Good luck with the search, I cant wait to see what you come up with.

Patty Young's Sanctuary range has some lovely prints.
Team up the Dahlia Lama (Love the name) in seafoam with orchid feng shui in ocean or Michael Miller Ta Dot in teal.
Or the chocolate and pink combo of the above prints.
Also from Patty - Geo Bloom and Building Blocks both in Sherbert.
And lastly from the Amy Butler Love range; Paradise Garden in Periwinkle with tangerine sun spots, or Memento in the midnight colourway with wine sun spots!

I've just bought the following fabrics to make skirts for myself (sometime in the far distant future):
1. Allison Jane Smith, Peacock, Proud Peacock in Sky
2. Patricia Bravo, Girly Girl, Vines in Pink
3. Patty Young, Flora and Fauna, Luna Moth in Raspberry

So one of them, so I cvan see what it looks like before I make mine!
